Tyama: A Multisensory Experience of Nature at Melbourne Museum

Tyama: A Multisensory Experience of Nature opened in late July 2022 at the Melbourne Museum.

This exhibition was inspired by Museums Victoria’s collections and informed by First People’s knowledge, TYAMA (Cha-muh). It is a multisensory experience of nature which is interactive and transports visitors to Victoria’s nocturnal worlds, immersing them in 360-degree responsive projections, breathtaking effects, and exquisite soundscapes.

Tyama blends the physical with objects from Museums Victoria’s collections and the digital to create an unmissable experience. Kate and her little ones explored the space a few weeks ago and really loved the calming and wonderful aspects of the Tyama projections and space.

Our calls bounce off things around us, helping our brains create a picture of our surroundings. Clap in the cave to use your echolocation like a bat!

Visitors can explore and play through six extraordinary digital environments - chase pheromones with moths, use sound to see like a bat and learn from fish to sense without touch.

The ocean room is by far a very popular room for little ones with lots of fish to look at, coral aspects as well as wandering sea animals and a kelp forest.

Little ones will love crawling and chasing crabs on the ground and exploring this gorgeous space of wonder like Mailed with Love’s little one did a while back.

Visitors can also swim with whales to discover the songlines that connect us all. This self-directed experience will take between 25 and 40 minutes and does not require touch. An inspiring exhibition that will make you want to visit time and time again.
