Jenny Zhe Chang: Sharing Light and Love through Blessings 2024 at Library at The Dock

  • Library at The Dock (map)

Presented during the 2024 Lanterns Festival of the Lunar New Year Celebration, it draws on traditions from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE). This installation transforms the library's window space, symbolizing liberation from the past and welcoming new perspectives with blessings.

The selected materials, bamboo steamers, and safety mesh carry rich symbolism. Bamboo steamers, associated with sharing dim sum, represent communal sharing, while the safety mesh symbolizes protection. Red lanterns, symbols of hope, luck, and good fortune will illuminate the installation.

Beneath each lantern, a suspended mirror and red card with blessings will reflect our environment and, more importantly, our inner selves. Ten large lanterns, specially created for the event, will honor Library at The Dock's decade of service to the community.

This installation powerfully communicates that regardless of the situation, each of us has the potential to contribute to the collective brilliance of light, kindness, and hope.
